Student School Board Representatives

 

The Tipton County Board of Education accepts applications annually for a student representative to serve as a non-voting member of the Board. Applications for the 2026-2027 Board Student Representative are due by April 30th. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and fulfill the responsibilities listed below. The application, information, and required forms may be acquired at the central office and/or counseling office of each high school during the spring semester each school year or downloaded using the link below.

 

Student Board Representative Application

 

Selection:

The Student Board Representative(s) will be selected by the Executive Committee and shall serve a one-year term (beginning with the 2026-2027 school year). S/he shall be a current Tipton County High School student in good standing entering his/her junior year.

The Board may remove a Student Board Representative during the term if s/he becomes ineligible or fails to fulfill his/her responsibilities. In the event of a vacancy prior to the expiration of the term, an alternate will be appointed by the Executive Committee.

The Student Board Representatives will:

  • Attend all regularly scheduled, monthly board work sessions and business meetings.
  • Contribute to board discussions by being prepared for meetings and providing student insight and perspective.
  • Report to students about the work of the board and district activities.
  • Give a report to the Board at the end of the year regarding the experience of serving and provide any appropriate information that may help to improve the effectiveness of such service.
  • Act and dress, while serving, in a manner consistent with other school board members and in accordance with the school board Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain his/her status as a student in good standing during his/her term of service.

 

The Student Board Representatives may:

  • Attend some board special events and meetings after consultation with the Board Chairman, and if scheduling allows.
  • Present a report at regular meetings regarding student activities in the district.
  • Be appointed to committees of the Board.

 

The Student Board Representatives will NOT:

      • Make motions, second motions, or vote.
      • Attend executive sessions.
      • Hold board offices.
      • Participate in board discussions or receive board materials concerning topics such as, but not limited to sensitive personnel matters, legal action strategy, negotiations strategy, individual student discipline, or other confidential matters as deemed necessary by the Board.
      • Receive compensation for their service to the school board.

 

The Board will:

  • Ensure that the Student Board Representative(s) receive/s training and monthly materials needed to satisfactorily serve.
  • Consider, respectfully, the/each Student Board Representative’s positions and recommendations as one element of its decision-making process.

 

Student Board Members shall not participate in the following:

    1. Student discipline hearing appeals;
    2. Teacher disciplinary matters;
    3. Meetings with legal counsel; or
    4. Confidential school safety plan meetings.TCS emblem
