The following link to the Tennessee Department of Education Office of Teacher Licensing will provide information to teachers about licensing.

Frequently Asked Questions

I recently moved and lost my teaching license. How do I get a copy?
The Office of Teacher Licensing offers detailed instructions on completion of the Duplicate of License / Name & Address Change form. This form is also used for any changes in personnel information including a change of address or name.

How do I renew my license?
It is the teacher's responsibility to renew his/her teaching license. The Renewal of Teacher Licenses page provides information about each type of license and how to renew.  Before mailing your completed license renewal form, please make a copy and send it to Personnel at the central office so that they can provide assistance should it become necessary.

Apprentice License:  If you are ready to advance to a Professional License, the principal must recommend you for that license.  The Personnel office will send the principal the appropriate form in the spring and the paperwork will be processed through the central office.

Professional License:  All teachers are responsible for the renewal of their Professional License. Teachers should print and complete the Application for Renewal of Ten Year Professional Teacher License from the state website. Teachers who hold at least a Master's Degree are not required to take coursework or accumulate points for renewal. Teachers who hold a Bachelor's Degree must accumulate 90 points in order to renew their license. The guidelines for accumulating the points are available on the application.

I am on an Alternative License, do I fall under the same guidelines?
Information regarding Alternative Licenses is available on the Renewal of Teacher Licenses page.  Both an Alternative A and E require the teacher to make progress toward completion of their Teacher Education Program (TEP).  In order to renew an Alternative License the paperwork must be generated by Personnel as it requires the signature of the Director of Schools.  Please contact Personnel if you have questions.

I am interested in adding an endorsement/degree to my existing license, what do I do?
The Office of Teacher Licensing provides information regarding the addition of an endorsement or a degree. Teachers should download the appropriate paperwork from the site.

The Office of Teacher Licensing offers all forms for download on one page for your convenience.

I have a college degree but have not completed a teacher education program.  Is there a way for me to become a teacher?
There are several alternative routes to becoming a certified teacher.  The state provides information regarding alternative licenses.  Persons interested in alternative licensing routes should also check colleges of education for information on alternative programs.

I am interested in becoming a Special Education Teacher, is there any information available?
Tennessee sponsors a program called base-tn (Become a Special Educator in Tennessee).  The link to the site provides information about the program as well as where the program is available.

I have vocational training or skilled experience, can I become a teacher?
Persons with such experience can find information on becoming a teacher on the page which addresses Occupational Education Licenses.
