Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad specifically tells the tale of quilts as a means for escape and the messages they contained. Unfortunately, this site is also selling books related to the material.

CIVIL WAR
The American Civil War Homepage provides links to civil war sources as well as music from the Civil War period. The music alone is worth the site!
Civil War: United States Colored Troops is an excellent site for information about black soldiers in the civil war. The site identifies links to specific regiments, their background, and battles in which black troops fought. This is an excellent site not only for U.S. History but for multicultural studies.

SOCIAL (LABOR)
Photos of Coal Miners at Work offers pictures of coal mining activities including "breaker boys."
The People: Coal Mining in the Scranton, Streamtown, Pocono, and Wilkes-Barre Region provides another site depicting mining life and child labor.
American Memory: Library of Congress is a site for the Haymarket Square Riot in Chicago; part of the labor movement during the late 19th century.
Chicago Historical Association provides photos and documents showing the Haymarket Square Riots.
Chicago Historical Association Exhibitions gives a number if exhibitions related to Chicago/Illinois history that are of national importance. The site includes the Great Chicago Fire, Haymarket Square Riot, Mary Todd and Lincoln's assassination, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.
ECONOMIC
The Gilded Age WebQuest: Documenting Industrialization in America includes highlights of the Gilded Age including technological innovations, big business, immigration and urbanization.
CULTURAL
New York Public Library: Small Town America gives scenes from America. Be sure to search for Coney Island to view scenes or go to "Browse" for gallery specific area.
Naturalism and Realism authors and artists are listed, as well as links to specific sites.

The Old Country in the New World offers works and some pictures related to child labor during the last quarter of the 19th century. This site also shows the "breaker boys" in the mines.
