WEB-SEARCHING SITES FOR PARENTS

Want to do some searching of your own? Here are some of our favorite search engines.

Alta Vista searches full-text, phrases, words within certain distances, and meta tags.

Ask Jeeves and Ask Jeeves for Kids is a great way to search by asking questions and letting the search engine pull out the important topic words. This site keeps you within the search engine so you will have to find what your actual site address is.

Excite integrates non-web material such as company information and sports scores when appropriate.

All The Web tries to index the entire web.

Find What is another search engine with some categories and full search capabilities.

Google This search engine uses link popularity as a primary way to rank web sites. This is helpful for general searches.

Go is another search engine that has some presearched topics as well as your own searching capabilities. Go is associated with the ABC network.

Hot Bot searches full text also, but this engine has pull-down menus to select fields to be searched.

Lycos is a quick search engine with categories and simple search features.

MSN has searching and categories of news all on the front page. MSN is sponsored by MSNBC.

Vivisimo This is a cluster search engine. Try it for organizing your searches.

WebCrawler is a great search engine that claims to have no banners, no buttons and no pop-ups. That may make this a favorite for many of us.

Yahoo is our favorite directory. It allows you to narrow your searches through the use of a hierarchical system.

Yahooligans is the same information; just geared to children.
