ARTICLE I NAME OF THE CHAPTER
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be the
Chorley-Moore Chapter of the
National Honor Society.
ARTICLE II PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION
Section 1. The purpose of this organization shall be to
create enthusiasm for
scholarship,
to stimulate a desire to render service, promote and support
leadership,
and to develop character in the students at Munford High
School.
ARTICLE III POWERS VESTED IN THE ORGANIZATION; THE
RIGHT TO
VETO
Section 1. The
Faculty Council has the right to veto the principal's decision with a
two-thirds
vote in matters pertaining to membership, probation or
dismissal
of its chapter members.
ARTICLE IV DEFINITION OF MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. A member of this chapter is expected to
continue demonstrating the
qualities
of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Members
are
expected to maintain the standards by which they were selected.
Section 2. A member must attend meetings and perform
both individual and
chapter
service projects. Failure to perform hours by the deadline may
result
in probation or expulsion.
ARTICLE V NOMINATION AND SELECTION OF THE MEMBERS
Section 1. A roster is run for students with a 3.3
grade point average or above.
The students must
be enrolled in the university, technical or dual path
programs.
Section 2. The roster is screened by the faculty and the
administration for conduct
that
is below satisfactory. A student must
not have any out of school or
in
school suspensions, or more than two office referrals.
Section 3.
Letters of invitation will be handed out to prospective members. The
letters
will invite them to mandatory meetings where they will obtain an
application. During this time the application is fully
reviewed with the
applicants
and stress is put on completing every column and category
since
their scores are dependent on the four areas established by the
national
organization. A deadline for submitting
the applications is
established and
current members of NHS along with
sponsors and
co-sponsers
will be available for help. Late
applications will not be
considered. Applicant will be encouraged to check with
the sponsor
to
ensure that their application is complete.
Section 4. When all applications are in, the
applications are scored as follows:
Scholarship: The grade point average of the student is
placed on the
application
with 4.0 being the highest possible points achieved.
Leadership: The categories for leadership are on the
front cover of the
application
and one point is given for each membership and/or activity.
Another point is
given if the student is an elected officer.
11 and above
leadership points - 6 points
9-10 leadership points - 5 points
7-8 leadership
points - 4 points
5-6 leadership
points - 3 points
3-4 leadership
points - 2 points
1-2 leadership
points - 1 point
Character: Recommendation forms are required from at
least three
teachers. All sheets are averaged for a numerical score
with five being
the
highest possible points.
Service: one point is earned for each verified
activity area up to a
maximum
of 6 points.
There is a maximum
of twenty-one points possible. As
suggested by
the
National Honor Society rulebook, a student must score 80% of those
possible
points (16.8) to be eligible for membership.
Section 5. Once the scores have been tallied for each
applicant, the qualifying
applications
are taken before the faculty council.
The faculty council
will
vote on each of the applicants.
Section 6. The favorable applicants are then given
letters informing them of their
acceptance
into the National Honor Society. The
letters inform them of
their
induction service that will officially designate them as members.
A potential
inductee must be present to be inducted, however, induction
in
absentia is allowable if the faculty council approves the candidates
petition. Another letter requests that they indicate
acceptance or denial
for
membership into the organization.
Section 7. Should any student on the university,
technical, or dual paths with a
3.3 GPA , not meet all of the selection criteria, the Faculty
Council may consider bestowing
"Honorary Membership" upon the
student. This membership grants the recipient all of
the privileges of
the
membership without the obligations associated with "active member
status.
Section 8. In the cases of non-selection of members,
special efforts will be made to
explain
the process to those students who are not chosen. Non-selected
students
will receive letters regarding their selection.
Students will be
invited
to discuss their applications with the chapter advisor. If the
student
or parents/guardians are not satisfied, the following process
will
take place:
1.
The student
and/or parents may request a conference with the
principal.
2.
The principal
will determine whether or not an appeal hearing
is
justified.
3.
If the appeal is deemed justified, the student
and parents will
Meet
with the Faculty Council and Chapter Advisor at a
designated
time and place.
4.
A vote will be
taken by the Faculty Council (principal and chapter
advisor
do not vote). The professional and
objective manner of the
Faculty
Council is final.
5.
The NASSP have no
authority to review or overturn the judgement
Of
the Faculty Council regarding selection of individual members
to local
chapters.
ARTICLE VI MEETINGS
Section 1. Meetings will be held once a month during
the scheduled activity
period. Attendance is encouraged but not
mandatory. Members are
responsible
for all information given out during the meeting.
Section 2. Special meetings may be called by the chapter
advisor(s).
ARTICLE VII RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OFFICERS
Section 1. The chapter officers will consist of a
president, vice-president, historian,
treasurer and a
secretary.
Section 2. The duties of the president are as follows:
a.
To preside over
the meetings.
b.
To call special
meetings, if necessary, after consultation with the advisors
c.
To see that all
actions of the chapter are enforced.
d.
To meet with the
advisors to plan agenda of the meetings.
Section 3. The duty of the Vice-President is to assume
the duties of the
president
in his absence or removal.
Section 4. The duties of the Secretary are as follows:
a.
To keep an
accurate account of records through accurate minutes.
b.
To make the
minutes available for anyone who wishes to see them.
Section 5. The duties of the Treasurer are as follows:
a.
Collect dues from
members
b.
Assist the
sponsor with bookkeeping duties.
Section 6. The duties of the Historian are as follows:
a.
To keep accurate
and maintain records regarding chapter activities.
b.
To supply
pictures of NHS activities to the yearbook and MHS homepage.
ARTICLE VIII ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Section 1.
The chapter members will apply listing all clubs, organizations and
offices
held. The perspective candidates will be
approved by the Faculty
Council and the
principal. An election will be
held during the first month
of
school.
ARTICLE
IX AMENDING BYLAWS
Section 1. The bylaws are to be reviewed annually and
changed if necessary to
meet
local needs.
Section 2. The bylaws may be amended at any meeting of
the faculty council by
an
affirmative vote of four.
ARTICLE X DISMISSAL FROM THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Section 1. Once a student is dismissed form the
Chorley-Moore Chapter of the
National Honor
Society, they can never be a member again.
Section 2. Reasons for dismissal
a.
A student must
not have any out of school suspensions or more than two office referrals.
b.
Inappropriate
conduct: Member is sent to the
Alternative Learning
Center.
c.
GPA falls below a
3.3.
(1) Student is advised by letter and placed on probation
for a semester.
(2) If GPA is not raised to a 3.3 or above at the end of
the
semester, they will be dismissed. Seniors that are on current
probation, who fail to raise their GPA, will be dismissed
and
not allowed to walk with National Honor Society regalia.
d.
If a student has
been placed on probation for an infraction, and
commits a second
infraction; this will result in the student being
dismissed from
the organization.
e.
The student makes
no attempt to earn service hours during the
school
year. Students who miss the deadline
will be given a letter of probation and a time limit to obtain their hours.
