Course Description: Computer Skills and Technology is a nine-week related arts class. This course emphasizes the use of different software programs to prepare students for real-world experiences after leaving Crestview Middle. Students will use keyboarding software called All the Right Type 3 PLUS, Microsoft Word for word processing, Microsoft Excel for spreadsheet applications, and Microsoft PowerPoint for creating slide shows. The course all involves the use of BrainPop, a web site that illustrates various technology concepts using two animated characters named Tim and Moby. Students will also be exposed to technology vocabulary that they can experience in real world situations. Eighth graders will also be utilizing an online career assessment program called Kuder to perform a career exploration for future career options. At this stage in their education, students are encouraged to focus on exploring career choices.
Standards: Each grade level has technology standards that is used as a guide in teaching technology-based lessons. Although there are numerous standards per grade level, there are only nine weeks in each grading period. Most secondary and post secondary schools often recommend that students know how to format documents for writing reports, create slide show presentations, and analyze data to create charts and graphs using a spreadsheet application. In this course, students are also encouraged to be aware of the issues such as cyber bullying, cyber predators, plagiarism, copyright law, virus prevention, social networking along with the positive and or negative effects of the technology issues, and other issues students might encounter in the real world when it comes to the exposure to technology. Below is the link to each grade level's technology standards. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view these standards. Click the Logo below to download the free software to your computer.
