Tennessee Scholars

2007 Requirements


To become a Tennessee Scholar students complete a demanding high school curriculum that emphasizes "on level" and above courses in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts (English and foreign language), and computer literacy. The program also stresses the importance of attendance and dependability.
In addition to meeting all State Board of Education graduation requirements, Tennessee Scholars complete the following course requirements:
• 4 English courses
• 4 Mathematics courses (Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and one higher level course)
• 3 Science courses (Biology I, Chemistry, Physics recommended and preferred)
• 3 Social Studies(History, Government and Economics)
• 1 Wellness
• 1 Fine Arts
• 2 Foreign Language courses in the same language
• 2 Career Technical Education courses (One full year credit must be a computer/keyboarding credit)
• Dual credit and online courses are acceptable.
Additional Requirements:
• 20 hours of Community Service
• Overall "C" average
• 95% attendance each year
• No out-of-school suspensions
• Must Pass all Gateway and Exit Exams
The Tennessee Standard is based on the existing Higher Education system in Tennessee which includes:
• Career Technical Schools, Community Colleges, the Board of Regents Universities and the University of Tennessee.
• It also fully considers the manufacturing and service industries in Tennessee and the trainable workforce needed for continuing their operations or new industry.
• This Tennessee Standard will allow students to pursue academic excellence to enter colleges, universities, or the technical workforce.
