GATEWAY AND EOC INFORMATION

What is a Gateway Exam?
On October 29, 1998 in compliance with Tennessee law, the State Board of Education designated ten high school courses for the development of end-of-course examinations. Three of these courses, Algebra I, Biology I and English II were designated as diploma requirements and became known as Gateway Tests. The tests serve two purposes. One as an End-of-Course test for the student when they are enrolled in the class, and two as a diploma requirement. These tests are now diploma requirements for all students.

What is an End-of-Course (EOC) test?
The End-of-Course Assessment Program consists of the remaining seven courses designated for testing by the State Board. These courses include Math Foundations II, English I, Physical Science, Algebra II, Geometry, Chemistry and U.S. History.

What tests are being administered in the 2007-08 school year?
Algebra I, Biology I, and English II Gateway exams are fully implemented. The EOC tests are Math Foundations II, English I, and Physical Science and U.S. History. Geometry, Algebra II and Chemistry will be field tested this year. For more information on the implementation of the tests, please go to the State Department of Education web site testing events schedule.

Do the Gateway/End-of-Course tests count as part of the course grade?
Yes, all students enrolled in these courses, regardless of grade classification, will take these tests and the scores will count as 20% of their course grade. For more information on this please see the Tipton County Board Gateway/End-of-Course Testing Policy .

What if a student is absent on the testing date?
As stated in the question above, all students must take the test. The testing dates are established by the State Board of Education. Students should be aware of the dates far enough in advance to plan around them. There will be a make-up date the following day. For more information on this please see the Tipton County Board Gateway/End-of-Course Testing Policy .
