Dear Parents and Students:

I cannot believe we are already in the 2nd nine weeks!  The first nine weeks was quite a learning experience for us all; I think we have all settled in.  This nine weeks we will read The Crucible  by Arthur Miller and hopefully cover several poems by Robert Frost.  Trying to teach persuasive writing and literature can be quite a challenge, as well as the college preparatory vocabulary.  Most days I will break the class into two sections, the first to focus on writing—the second to focus on literature.  It is so important that your students keep up with their assignments as I will not allow late work to be turned in this nine weeks.  Please be mindful of this.

This year our students have a wonderful opportunity to practice the persuasive style of writing in the comfort of their homes.  In fact, I will require that my students complete several essays outside of class.  So, please be aware of this.  You may visit learningexpressadvantage.com to get a feel for what this website can do for your student.  Every student has been given a password, so please consult your student before going on the website.

As always, if you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Literary Analysis report is due on December 9th for Odd/ December 10 for EVEN.

Students will type a persuasive essay  to analyze one of the following topics pertaining to The Crucible by

Miller :  Some personalities have an inbred power to manipulate others.

Guilt is a powerful agent in effecting vulnerability in an individual.  To explain the unexplainable, the human mind reaches into a supernatural domain.  People can often cave in to authority figures for fear of being socially isolated.  “Hell hath no fury like that of a woman scorned.”  Evil is in the eye of the beholder.  Integrity is an intrinsic element of the heroic.

Students will choose one of the aforementioned topics to write a persuasive essay in MLA format and with a second source.  This essay will include a Works Cited page.  Students may use no fewer than three quotes from the play and two from an outside source.

EXTRA CREDIT  If you read or hear any of the vocabulary words from any unit we have covered, just write the sentence as you read it (use the MLA format to document) or as you heard the word used.  Be certain to include the source and page numbers if this is a written document. Students will receive one extra credit point for each vocabulary word detected.  I will add points to the Summer Reading test, or any quizzes or homework assignments.

Creative Writing:   Your students are so bright and creative.  During the first nine weeks, I was able to learn your students writing habits, strengths and weaknesses.   Your students have shown very strong skills in writing short stories, essays, and for several—poetry.  We are working toward a field trip to BES to share our short stories and illustrations.

Don’t forget about our Coffee House on December 10, 2009.
