COURSE DESCRIPTION

Per the Dyersburg State Community College catalog:

MATH 1910 – Calculus and Analytic Geometry I (4 semester hours)

Topics covered include: plane analytic concepts, continuity limits, the derivative with applications, curve sketching, the integral and applications, integrals and derivatives of trigonometric functions.

MATH 1920 – Calculus and Analytic Geometry II (4 semester hours)

Topics covered include: integrals and derivatives of exponential logarithmic and hyperbolic functions, methods of integration, integral applications, conic sections, parametric equations, polar coordinates, limits and continuity.

CLASS & LAB MEETING TIMES

Calculus class will meet on EVEN days. On 3rd period of ODD days, there will be two lab sessions that are each 45 minutes long. Students will attend only one of these sessions. Those students taking AP English will have calculus for the first session, go to C lunch, then go to AP English for the second session. Students not enrolled in AP English will be assigned to a session and will attend directed study or other suitable study area for the other.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPLIES

All students must have these supplies in class: two sharpened #2 pencils (or a mechanical #2 with extra lead) with erasers, a notebook with pockets and lined paper, graph paper, straight edge, a graphing calculator, and the textbook. The textbook is Thomas’ Calculus Early Transcendentals Media Upgrade by Thomas, Weir, hass, & Giordano, 11th Edition. . It can be purchased through BHS at cost or independently. The same text will be used for the entire year, covering both MATH 1910 and MATH 1920 for DSCC.

CLASSROOM SUPPLIES

Students must bring these supplies, for use in the classroom, by September 4, 2009:

1st Even Girls:  1 pack with 80+ sheets of graph paper and 2 boxes of facial tissues

1st Even Boys:  1 pack with 80+ sheets of graph paper and 1 bottle 8+ oz Germ-X or Purex

2nd Even Girls:  1 pack with 80+ sheets of graph paper, 1 ruler, 1 box of bandages

2nd Even Boys:  1 pack with 80+ sheets of graph paper, 1 ruler, and 1 bottle glass cleaner

TEACHER CONTACT

See the BHS website to e-mail me. I will also be in my classroom at 7:00 each morning.

CLASSROOM RESPECT RULES AND PENALTIES

All school policies, such as those for cell phones and dress code, will be strictly enforced per school guidelines. For rules not specifically addressed in BHS policy, see below.

Student will show respect for the:

§           teacher -- pay attention, not complain, stay on task, wait to be dismissed, etc.

§           teacher’s belongings – do not take or use anything from teacher’s area, etc.

§           other students – keep hands to self, do not ridicule at all, be helpful and polite, etc.

§           learning environment  -- talk when others are not, be still/quiet, sit as assigned, etc.

§           classroom – pick up trash, do not write on any surface, straighten chairs, etc.

Teacher will maintain a record of rule violations. Penalties for breaking these are:

§           1st Offense – warning (may be repeated at teacher discretion)

§           2nd Offense – private discussion with teacher and extra assignment

§           3rd Offense – call to parents and extra assignment

§           4th Offense – trip to office (consequences assigned there)

The number of offenses will be “reset” at teacher discretion. Note that penalties will reduce the day’s participation grade significantly, may exempt student from some extra credit opportunities, and may be reflected in the student’s conduct grade.

STUDENT WORK/ATTITUDE RULES AND PENALTIES

All submitted work and tests must be neat and legible, organized,

identified (see insert), and submitted on time for full credit.

All work must be in pencil. A deduction of 10 points will be made

for work that is illegible or incorrectly identified. Homework may

be in notebook with notes but must begin at the top of a new page

and be correctly labeled. A deduction of 10 points per class period will be made to any late assignment. Work more than 3 class periods late will not be accepted for a grade.

SEVERE PENALTIES

Cheating on a test will result in an automatic zero for that assessment and a retake will not be allowed. Parents will be called, a grade of “U” in conduct will be entered for the 9-weeks period, and a trip to the office will result. Aiding another student in his/her attempt to cheat will result in the same penalties. Fighting will always result in a trip to the office (consequences to be assigned there) and a grade of “U” in conduct.

ABSENCE POLICIES

Tests: Student absent on the class day before a test but present on the test day must take the test on the test day. Student absent on test day but not the previous class day must take test on the day of return. Student absent on test day and previous day must take  test on the second class day after return. Tests will be taken in classroom or a nearby classroom, at teacher discretion, unless other arrangements are made in advance.

Homework: Student must submit HW on day test is taken. Otherwise, it is considered late. Exceptions apply as stated for tests.

GRADES

There are two sets of grades – one for Brighton High School and one for Dyersburg State Community College. Please note the more stringent requirements for the college courses. There will be no separate grades given for the lab but these will be part of the class grade.

Dyersburg State Course

MATH 1910 will be completed during the first semester and MATH 1920 during the second. The percentages and information below pertain to each. Only exams contribute to these grades and extra credit is not available for these courses.

Tests (80 % of Grade)

The exam score given for the BHS course will also be the score for the DSCC course.

Final Exam (20 % of Grade)

The final exam is provided by DSCC and is cumulative. The midterm exam of the BHS course is the final exam of the MATH 1910 course at DSCC; the final exam of the BHS course is the final exam of the MATH 1920 course at DSCC.

Grading Scale

Per standard college grading: A 90 – 100, B 80 – 89, C 70 – 79, D 60 – 69, F 0 – 59

BHS Course

NOTE: Three points will be added to the nine-weeks average for this course.

Participation (15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

A participation grade of 10 points will be given each day. Student must be seated at the bell, have ALL individual supplies, listen attentively, participate in board and group work, and not violate respect rules for full 10 points credit. (Notes are recommended but not required.) More than one offense per day warrants zero grade.

Homework (15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

Homework assignments are listed on the schedule. Solutions will be provided and questions answered. Homework is graded only on test days, for possible 100 points, with original problems written and all work shown. Grade based on completion as well as correctness.

Tests (70 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

Tests will be given per the schedule. Tests will be largely multiple-choice in the beginning and move toward all open-ended questions. Tests will be individual work without book or notes. A review will be done on the class meeting before the test. Comprehensive tests at the end of the first nine weeks and at the end of the third nine weeks will be included in the grades for the corresponding grading periods.

Midterm and Final Exam

A cumulative test will be given at the end of each semester. The tests will be open-ended and done individually without book/notes. These will not comprise part of the nine weeks grade but are 20% of the appropriate semester grade per BHS policy.

Extra Credit

Check “the pole” in the classroom for a complete list of extra credit opportunities.

Grading Scale

Per BHS policy: A 93 –100, B 85 – 92, C 75 – 84, D 70 – 74, F 0 – 69

There is no course grade for Calculus lab; students will work together on homework in lab.
