BHS Algebra 2

Mrs. Kim F. Collier

Syllabus

OBJECTIVE

Our primary focus in this class will be preparing for the ACT and higher mathematics. We will review basic math, Algebra 1, and geometry concepts as needed and student will be responsible for these as well as new concepts. In addition we will learn how to take notes, study, and read a textbook.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPLIES

All students must have these supplies in class: two sharpened #2 pencils (or a mechanical #2 with extra lead) with erasers, a highlighter, a notebook with pockets and lined paper, graph paper, straight edge, a scientific or graphing calculator, and the textbook.

CLASSROOM SUPPLIES

Students must bring these supplies, for use in the classroom, by the end of August:

one bottle of hand sanitizer, one packs of 4 or more EXPO dry erase markers (chisel-tip in black or dark colors), and one dry eraser.

CLASSROOM RESPECT RULES AND PENALTIES

All school policies, such as those for cell phones and dress code, will be strictly enforced per school guidelines. For rules not specifically addressed in BHS policy, see below.

Student will show respect for the:

§           teacher -- pay attention, not complain, stay on task, wait to be dismissed, etc.

§           teacher’s belongings – do not take or use anything from teacher’s area, etc.

§           other students – keep hands to self, do not ridicule at all, be helpful and polite, etc.

§           learning environment  -- talk when others are not, be still/quiet, sit as assigned, etc.

§           classroom – pick up trash, do not write on any surface, straighten chairs, etc.

Teacher will maintain a record of rule violations. Penalties for breaking these are:

§           1st Offense – warning (may be repeated at teacher discretion)

§           2nd Offense – private discussion with teacher and extra assignment

§           3rd Offense – call to parents and extra assignment

§           4th Offense – trip to office (consequences assigned there)

The number of offenses will be “reset” at teacher discretion. Note that penalties will reduce the day’s participation grade significantly, may exempt student from some extra credit opportunities, and may be reflected in the student’s conduct grade.

STUDENT WORK/ATTITUDE RULES AND PENALTIES

Homework, projects, and tests must be neat and legible,

organized, identified, and submitted on time for full credit.

All work, with the exception of projects, must be in pencil.

A deduction of 10 points will be made for illegible or incorrectly

identified. Homework may be in notebook but must begin at top

of a new page and be correctly labeled. A deduction of 10 points per class period will be made to any late assignment. Work more than 3 class periods late will not be accepted.

SEVERE PENALTIES

Cheating on a test will result in an automatic zero for that assessment and a retake will not be allowed. Parents will be called, a grade of “U” in conduct will be entered for the 9-weeks period, and a trip to the office will result. Aiding another student in his/her attempt to cheat will result in the same penalties. Fighting will always result in a trip to the office (consequences to be assigned there) and a grade of “U” in conduct.

ABSENCE POLICIES

Tests: Student absent on the class day before a test but present on the test day must take the test on the test day. Student absent on test day but not the previous class day must take test on the day of return. Student absent on test day and previous day must take  test on the second class day after return. Tests will be taken in classroom or a nearby classroom, at teacher discretion, unless other arrangements are made in advance.

Homework: Student must submit HW on day test is taken. Otherwise, it is considered late. Exceptions apply as stated for tests.

Project: Determined by group rules in class.

GRADING POLICIES

Participation (15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

A participation grade of 10 points will be given each day. Student must be seated at the bell, have ALL individual supplies, listen attentively, participate in board and group work, and not violate respect rules for full 10 points credit. (Notes are recommended but not required.) More than one offense per day warrants zero grade.

Homework (15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

Homework assignments are listed on the schedule. Solutions will be provided and questions answered. Homework is graded only on test days, for possible 100 points, with original problems written and all work shown. Grade based on completion/correctness.

Tests (50 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

Tests will be given per the schedule, covering 1-2 chapters. Tests will be largely multiple-choice with some open-ended questions. Tests will be individual work without book or notes. A review will be done on the class meeting before the test.

Projects/Comprehensive Tests (20 % of Nine Weeks Grade)

There will be one project each in the 2nd and 4th 9-weeks periods. A project, worth 100 points, must be done in groups according to the rules and consequences established by the class. Work will be presented as an oral or written report. Rubric will be provided. There will be a comprehensive test in the 1st and 3rd 9-weeks. The comprehensive test will cover all material from the corresponding grading period.

Midterm and Final Exam

A cumulative test will be given at the end of each semester. The tests will be multiple-choice and done individually without book/notes. These will not comprise part of the nine weeks grade but are 20% of the appropriate semester grade per BHS policy.

Extra Credit

Check “the pole” in the classroom for a complete list of extra credit opportunities.

Grading Scale

Per BHS policy: A 93 –100, B 85 – 92, C 75 – 84, D 70 – 74, F 0 – 69
