BHS Advanced
Math is a dual enrollment class with
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Per the
MATH 1710 – College Algebra (3
semester hours)
Topics include analysis of
functions and graphs, complex numbers, quadratic and absolute value inequalities,
exponential and logarithmic equations, systems of equations and inequalities,
linear programming, matrices, determinants, and applications.
MATH 1720 – College
Trigonometry (3 semester hours)
Topics covered include
definitions and graphs of trig functions, inverse trig functions, right
triangle trigonometry, solution of oblique triangles, polar coordinates, trig
identities and equations, complex numbers, and binomial theorem.
CLASS & LAB MEETINGS
Students attend Advanced
Math class ODD days and the corresponding lab on EVEN days as per individual
schedules. The class meetings will generally be lecture mixed with student work
on the board and in groups. The lab meetings will generally be split between
homework time and ACT Math preparation, but may be used to complete topics from
class.
INDIVIDUAL SUPPLIES
All
students must have these supplies in class: two sharpened #2 pencils (or a
mechanical #2 with extra lead) with erasers, a notebook with pockets and lined
paper, graph paper, straight edge, a graphing calculator, and two textbooks.
The algebra textbook is College Algebra by Lial,
Hornsby, & Schneider, 10th Edition. It can be purchased through
BHS at cost or independently. The trigonometry book has yet to be determined by
DSCC.
CLASSROOM SUPPLIES
Students must bring the
following supplies, for use in the classroom, by September 4, 2009.
1st

CLASSROOM RESPECT RULES AND PENALTIES
All school policies, such as
those for cell phones and dress code, will be strictly enforced per school
guidelines. For rules not specifically addressed in BHS policy, see below.
Student will show respect
for the:
§
teacher -- pay attention, not complain, stay on task, wait
to be dismissed, etc.
§
teacher’s belongings – do not take or use anything from
teacher’s area, etc.
§
other students – keep hands to self, do not ridicule at all, be helpful and polite, etc.
§
learning environment
-- talk when others are not, be still/quiet, sit as assigned, etc.
§
classroom – pick up trash, do not write on any surface,
straighten chairs, etc.
Teacher will maintain a
record of rule violations. Penalties for breaking these are:
§
1st
Offense – warning (may be repeated at teacher discretion)
§
2nd
Offense – private discussion with teacher and extra assignment
§
3rd
Offense – call to parents and extra assignment
§
4th
Offense – trip to office (consequences assigned there)
The number of offenses will
be “reset” at teacher discretion. Note that penalties will reduce the day’s
participation grade significantly, may exempt student from some extra credit
opportunities, and may be reflected in the student’s conduct grade.

STUDENT WORK/ATTITUDE RULES AND PENALTIES
All submitted work and tests
must be neat and legible, organized,
identified (see insert), and submitted on time for full credit.
All work must be in pencil.
A deduction of 10 points will be made
for work that is illegible or incorrectly identified. Homework
may
be in notebook with notes but must begin at the top of
a new page
and be correctly labeled. A deduction of 10 points per class period will be made to any
late assignment. Work more than 3 class periods late will not be accepted for a
grade.
SEVERE PENALTIES
Cheating on a test will
result in an automatic zero for that assessment and a retake will not be
allowed. Parents will be called, a grade of “U” in conduct will be entered for
the 9-weeks period, and a trip to the office will result. Aiding another
student in his/her attempt to cheat will result in the same penalties. Fighting
will always result in a trip to the office (consequences to be assigned there)
and a grade of “U” in conduct.
ABSENCE POLICIES
Tests: Student absent on the class day before a test but
present on the test day must take the
test on the test day. Student absent on test day but not the previous class day
must take test on the day of return. Student absent on test day and previous
day must take test
on the second class day after return. Tests will be taken in classroom or a
nearby classroom, at teacher discretion, unless other arrangements are made in
advance.
Homework: Student must submit HW on day test is taken.
Otherwise, it is considered late. Exceptions apply as stated for tests.
Test
Corrections: Student must submit
test correction within two lab meetings after the test has been returned to the
class. Otherwise, it is considered late.
GRADES
There are two sets of grades
– one for
The lab is a separate class
and grade for BHS but is not a part of the DSCC grade.
MATH 1710 will be completed
during the first semester and MATH 1720 during the second. The percentages and
information below pertain to each. Only exams contribute to these grades and
extra credit is not available for these courses.
Tests (80 % of Grade)
The
exam score given for the BHS course will also be the score for the DSCC course.
Final Exam (20 % of Grade)
The
final exam is provided by DSCC and is cumulative. The midterm exam of the BHS
course is the final exam of the MATH 1710 course at DSCC; the final exam of the
BHS course is the final exam of the MATH 1720 course at DSCC.
Grading Scale
Per
standard college grading: A 90 – 100, B 80 – 89, C 70 – 79, D 60 – 69, F 0 – 59

NOTE: Three points will be added to each nine-weeks average for this course.
Participation
(15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)
A participation grade of 10 points will be given each
day. Student must be seated at the bell, have ALL individual supplies, listen attentively,
participate in board and group work, and not violate respect rules for full 10
points credit. (Notes are recommended but not required.) More than one offense
per day warrants zero grade.
Homework (15
% of Nine Weeks Grade)
Homework assignments are listed on the schedule. Solutions
will be provided and questions answered. Homework is graded only on test days, for
possible 100 points, with original problems written and all work shown. Grade
based on completion and well as correctness.
Tests (70 % of
Nine Weeks Grade)
Tests will be given per the schedule. Tests will be
largely multiple-choice with some open-ended questions. Tests will be
individual work without book or notes. A review will be done on the class
meeting before the test. Comprehensive tests at the end of the first nine weeks
and at the end of the third nine weeks will be included in the grades for the
corresponding grading periods.
Midterm and
Final Exam
A cumulative test will be given at the end of each
semester. The tests will be open-ended and done individually without book/notes.
These will not comprise part of the nine weeks grade but are 20% of the
appropriate semester grade per BHS policy.
Extra Credit
Check “the pole” in the classroom for a complete list
of extra credit opportunities.

A participation grade of 10 points will be given each
day. Student must be seated at the bell, have ALL individual supplies, listen
attentively, participate in board and group work, and not violate respect rules
for full 10 points credit. Additionally, students will be expected to do

to teacher.
Test
Corrections (15 % of Nine Weeks Grade)
After each test given in class or lab, students will
be required to work any missed problems and submit it for a grade within two
lab meetings after the test has been returned.
Tests (70 %
of Nine Weeks Grade)
ACT Math tests will be given approximately once per
month. These tests cover material from pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and
Algebra 2. Test scores are calculated by comparing student results with TVAS
prediction. Comprehensive tests at the end of the first nine weeks and at the
end of the third nine weeks will be included in the grades for the
corresponding grading periods. These may incorporate material from the class or
lab.
Midterm and
