General Music Information

Course Description

 This course consists of a survey of music in our culture and others.  The following activities are some of the ways students will be engaged in learning:

·       Analyzing and interpreting music through listening

·       Exploring various styles of music and composers through reading, discussion, and research

·       Discussing and presenting the importance and significance of music in various areas of our culture and others

 

Course Requirements   

Students are responsible for bringing necessary materials to class, such as text, notes, and other assigned materials.  Notes will be taken throughout the semester and should be kept in a folder.  This folder will be checked and graded periodically for required papers.  Students will also be responsible for some outside research for class or homework assignments.  Pencil or pen may be used in class, but no metallic or fluorescent colors may be used on work that is to be handed in.

 

Grading system

·       50% Daily grades (homework, quizzes, projects, etc.)

·       40% Tests (a minimum of 2 tests will be given each 9 weeks)

·       10% Participation (verbal and nonverbal)

Any copying or cheating will result in a zero for both participants.  Late assignments will not be accepted, but a student can make up the work by completing an extra credit assignment at the end of the nine weeks.

Grading scale: 

A=   93 – 100   D =  70 - 74

B =  85- 92      F =    0 - 69

C =  75 – 84

 

Tardy and Attendance Policy

If a student misses a class period for any reason other than a field trip their agenda book must be stamped before returning to class.  It is the student’s responsibility to check on missed assignments in the case of an absence.

 

 

Class Rules

1)   Follow all school rules and procedures.

2)   Students are to be in their seats ready for class to begin when the bell rings.

3)   Paper, pencils/pens, and books must be brought to class each day.

4)   Be quiet when other people are speaking or I am speaking.

5)   Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking.

6)   Show respect at all times by listening and following all directions the first time.

7)   Work only on General Music work in class.

 

Consequences

1)   Verbal or nonverbal warning

2)   Assignment of write-offs

3)   Call to parents

4)   See administrator – Open disrespect will result in the student being sent immediately to an administrator.
