Pacing

We will be spending three to four days on each chapter so be prepared for a fast paced class. The following is a guideline and is subject to change. You will be responsible for reading each chapter so you will always have homework of reading even if I do not specifically assign it.

1st 9 weeks                   Chapters 12-17 (6)

2nd 9weeks                   Chapters 18- 22 (5)

3rd 9 weeks                  Chapters 23-28 (6)

4th 9 weeks                  Chapters 29-33 (5)

Quizzes

Identification Quiz: I will provide you with a list of vocabulary words that you need to define at the beginning of each chapter. The student will be responsible for defining these words. Be sure to identify who, what, when, where, why, and the purpose for each word. There will be occasions when you cannot answer each question but try to find an answer to each question for all of the vocabulary words. Not all of the words I give you will be on your quiz. For example, I give you 20 words to define and your quiz only has 15 listed then you must choose 10 to answer. The quiz is free response so you must write out your response in complete sentences. If you do not address all of the possible questions you will receive partial credit. It is important to be extremely thorough with your answers.  A rubric will be provided on my website so you will know how you are being graded.

Essay: The quiz will cover the main concepts covered in the chapter. Sometimes you will be asked to state your opinion about an event and you must be sure that you back your opinion with specific examples from history. Your grade will reflect the accuracy of your answer as well as grammatical correctness. Each answer should be at least five paragraphs long. A rubric will be provided on my website so you will know how you are being graded.

Tests

Your tests will be multiple choice and will be comprehensive in nature for the entire course. This means that each test will go back and cover previous chapters we have studied to ensure long term understanding of the concepts. The tests will contain approximately 60 questions. There will be anywhere from 10 to 20 questions from previous chapters on each test. It is the responsibility of the student to review previous chapters for the test.

Procedures

Beginning of class: You will come in and complete the bellringer that is on the board or worksheet that is provided for you. It is important that you sharpen your pencil at the beginning of class and if you came unprepared then you need to borrow a writing utensil and paper from a classmate before instruction starts. You will have anywhere from five to fifteen minutes to complete the bellringer depending on the activity. IF you are absent then you need to record the date and write ABSENT below the date.

During class: Any written work will be turned in to the correct tray at the front of the room unless you are instructed otherwise. Be sure to put it in the correct class period slot. If you have an emergency and need to go to the restroom then you must bring your agenda when you come to ask permission. You will be limited to the number of times you can go to the restroom so use them wisely. Abuse of the restroom will result in the student being sent to the office.

End of class: Students are not dismissed by the bell but by the teacher. Students are expected to stay in their seats until dismissed.

Make up work

If you miss a test or quiz then you will have to make arrangements to make it up outside of your normal class time. I am coaching two sports this year so I will not be able to stay after school very much. It is very important for you to be in class everyday.

Extra Credit

Extra Credit will be given at the beginning of a chapter and will be due the day of that chapter test, no exceptions. Extra Credit will NOT be given at the end of the nine weeks so do not ask for it then.
