Tennessee Academic Vocabulary

The Tennessee Academic Vocabulary was generated by groups of volunteer subject matter and grade level specialists from Tennessee schools whose charge was to identify those terms and phrases that are important to student understanding of math, science, language arts and social studies. The words and phrases identified are not to be considered an all inclusive list. Teachers are encouraged to add terms and phases and/or create additional lists. The original document, Tennessee Academic Vocabulary: A Guide for Educators, is located on the Curriculum Standards page on the state website.

Although there is no single best way to teach terms and phrases, in the Tennessee Academic Vocabulary Project, Marzano & Associates offer that research and theory on vocabulary development suggest the following:
  • Initially provide students with a decription, explanation or example as opposed to a formal definition
  • Have students generate their own descriptions, explanations or examples
  • Have students represent each term or phrase using a graphic representation, picture, or pictograph
  • Have students keep an academic vocabulary notebook
  • Periodically review the terms and phrases and provide students with activities that add to their knowledge base
