Summer Institutes - Teachers

Teachers seeking information regarding the waiting lists should check their county email for updates.

 

AIMS Math Grades 5-9
Geometry and Multiplication the Algebra Way

June 5-7, BMS (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
AIMS Education Foundation will conduct two days to include "Geometry" and "Multiplication the Algebra Way." In the "Geometry" session, teachers will use hands-on experiences of paper cutting, geoboards, puzzles, sorting, covering and filling to help students understand geometric formulas and dimensions. During "Multiplication the Algebra Way," teachers will use the familiar context of arithmetic to introduce and reinforce key concepts, with emphasis on the distributive property, integers, and pattern generalization. The third day will be spent working on ways to integrate the new strategies into their lesson plans for the fall. Teachers will receive materials to use in their classrooms. (30 seats)

 

High School Reading

July 26-27, TBA (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
Join Etta Crittenden, Tennessee Department of Education and Trevecca University, as she explores reading with high school teachers. This two day institute will include the five components of reading, content area reading strategies and vocabulary building. The third day of this institute will take place on November 15, 2007. (20 seats)

 

Reading I*

July 10-12, BES (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
The primary goal of this institute is to help all students become fluent readers in the early education years, then help them expand their literacy abilities throughout their schooling. This institute will include the seven principles for supporting literacy development and the National Reading Panel's Put Reading First. Reading II*

June 19-21, AES (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
This institute is designed as an expansion for teachers who attended the Reading Institute in July, 2005. Join us as we take a look at the National Reading Panel's "Big Five" of Reading. Through hands-on experiences, we will further explore research-based reading strategies for improving student performance. Our goal is to provide you with practical ideas and materials you can use next year! (25 seats)

* Reading Academy I and Reading Academy II may NOT be taken in the same summer.
Reading Academy II builds on Reading Academy I. The dates are not consecutive.

 

Response to Intervention Training (RTI)
Waiting List 04/18/07

July 17-19, CES (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
Response to Intervention (RTI) Training is for the regular education teacher as well as the special education teacher in grades K-4. This training will explain the four modules - the overview, assessment, reading strategies, and putting it ALL together. RTI is the way of the future for referring students for special education services. (20 seats) {If you wish to be placed on the waiting list, please complete an application}

 

Strategies and Tools for Teaching the Writing Process

June 4-July 13, Online
This workshop will support teachers of middle and high school students in their incorporation of technology tools into the writing curriculum. Participants will be introduced to powerful software and web-based tools that enhance the various stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising and publishing. Participants will also explore a range of resources and exemplary projects that take advantage of these technologies in the classroom. Participants will complete the workshop with a collection of resources and preliminary lesson plans that address their local and state standards and curricular goals. Although the workshop takes place online, required face-to-face meetings will take place on June 4 (9:00 -12:00) and July 13 (9:00 - 12:00) at CMS. (20 seats)

 

Technology Academy I: Tools and Integration in the Classroom*

June 5-7, CMS (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
Technology Academy I is a beginner level technology workshop that addresses resources readily available to integrate technology into the classroom. Topics that will be covered are basic web page design, basic classroom integration, online tools for teachers, GroupWise Calendar and much more. Each participant will receive a multimedia CD upon completion. (PC or Mac format – 25 seats each platform) {If you wish to be placed on the waiting list for the Mac platform academy, please complete an application}

 

Technology Academy II: Tools and Integration in the Classroom*
Waiting List - PC platform 05/07/07

May 29-31, CMS (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)
Technology Academy II is an extension of Tech Academy I. It is geared toward those who completed Tech Academy I last summer OR those with intermediate/advanced technology skill levels. Topics on the agenda include web page design, locating and creating online games and reviews, creating interactive PowerPoint presentations, online tools for teachers, using shortcuts and much more. Each participant will receive a multimedia and resource CD upon completion. (PC or Mac format – 25 seats each platform) Prerequisite: Technology Academy I or permission of the instructor. {If you wish to be placed on the waiting list for the PC platform academy, please complete an application}

* Technology Academy I and Technology Academy II may NOT be taken in the same summer.
Topics are similar, but skill levels are different. The dates are not consecutive.
