AIMS Math Grades 3-5
Geometry, Measurement and Problem Solving

AIMS Education Foundation will conduct three days of training to include Geometry, Measurement and Problem Solving. The training will center around building conceptual understanding of shape and dimension through hands-on geometry; exploring the concepts of length, mass, and volume measurement and the use of measurement techniques; and developing fluency with the five key problem solving strategies. Teachers will receive materials to use in their classrooms. (30 seats)

 

Helping Struggling Readers Improve Comprehension
Grades 6-12

Struggling readers and writers may have difficulty decoding text, comprehending, and conveying ideas through writing. This workshop focuses specifically on supporting the academic development of students who are competent decoders but who struggle to understand the meaning of what they read. We will explore the different types of comprehension difficulties students may face and will introduce a number of research-based strategies to improve comprehension skills. As a final project, participants will design and implement a lesson plan focused on improving students' reading comprehension. Although the workshop takes place online, required face-to-face meetings will take place on May 30 (9:00 - 12:00) and July 18 (9:00 - 12:00) at MHS. Participants will receive a $300 stipend. Response to Intervention (RTI) Training is for the regular education teacher as well as the special education teacher in grades K-4. This training will explain the four modules - the overview, assessment, reading strategies, and putting it ALL together. RTI is the way of the future for referring students for special education services. (20 seats)

Technology Integration & Strategies for Standardized Assessment Preparation

June 17-19, MES (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)

This training by Internet 4Classrooms.com is designed to assist teachers in integrating technology in daily lessons using Microsoft Office and/or the Internet. Participants will explore strategies for using technology within their lessons. Hands-on activities will give participants opportunities to see integration in action and how to adapt these to use with their own students. Teachers will also find resources on the Internet to assist them in preparing students for State Standardized Testing such as TCAP. Teachers will access sites that will support individualized instruction for a student's area of need. Participants will locate examples of tested skills and access actual out-of-date tests for classroom practice. Mac format for grades 2-5. (24 seats).

Classroom Organization and Management (COMP)

COMP is a research-based professional development program that can help you learn to create and manage an effective learning environment in your classroom. Its goal is to help teachers improve their overall instructional and behavioral management skills through planning, implementing, and maintaining effective classroom practices. (27 seats)

 

Healthy, Fit Children Make Better Learners

July 15-17, Central Office, (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)

This training has been designed to help educators make the connection between health and learning. It will emphasize the importance and how to's of incorporating physical activity into classrooms outside of PE and recess times. The agenda includes a Tennessee Department of Education Physical Education specialist and a review of all coordinated school health policies and requirements. Adventure Designs will provide one day of training on how to implement cooperative games, trust activities and group initiatives to expand the learning goals of the PE program and enhance the classroom experience. The agenda will also include a day on staff wellness including health screenings, stress management, etc. (30 seats)

 

Technology Academies

*Technology Academy I: Tools and Integration in the Classroom

June 10-12, MHS -PC (8:00 am to 3:00 pm) MES-Mac (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)

Technology Academy I is a beginner level technology workshop that addresses resources readily available to integrate technology into the classroom. Topics that will be covered are basic web page design, basic classroom integration, online tools for teachers, GroupWise Calendar and much more. Each participant will receive a multimedia CD upon completion. (PC or Mac format – 24 seats each platform)

 

*Technology Academy II: Tools and Integration in the Classroom
**Waiting List - Wednesday, April 16, 2008**

May 27-29, MHS (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)

Technology Academy II is an extension of Tech Academy I. It is geared toward those who completed Tech Academy I last summer OR those with intermediate/advanced technology skill levels. Topics on the agenda include web page design, locating and creating online games and reviews, creating interactive PowerPoint presentations, online tools for teachers, using shortcuts and much more. Each participant will receive a multimedia and resource CD upon completion. (PC format only– 24 seats) Prerequisite: Technology Academy I or permission of the instructor .

 

*Technology Academy III: Tools and Integration in the Classroom
**Waiting List - Tuesday, April 29, 2008**

June 3-5, MHS (8:00 am to 3:00 pm)

Technology Academy III is an extension of Tech Academy II. It is geared toward those who completed Tech Academy II last summer OR those with advanced technology skill levels. Topics on the agenda include web page design, creating online games and reviews, creating forms with Adobe Acrobat, using Web 2.0 tools and much more. Each participant will receive a multimedia and resource CD upon completion. (PC format – 24 seats) Prerequisite: Technology Academy II or permission of the instructor .

* Multiple Technology Academies may NOT be taken in the same summer.
Topics are similar, but skill levels are different.
