Flu UpdateThe Tipton County School District wants to assure all stakeholders that we are monitoring the number of absences in our schools. The most recent information from the Tennessee Department of Health has advised that there have been low levels of flu all summer. Seasonal flu and H1N1 will both be present this winter, so it will be possible to have the flu two times. Persons are encouraged to get the seasonal vaccine when it is available. Essentially the diagnosis and treatment for H1N1 is the same as for seasonal flu. We have been apprised that as of Friday, August 28, 2009, that the state is generally no longer testing for H1N1 except in unusual circumstances because the diagnosis and treatment is the same. There are no longer counts provided because they are not relevant. Both types of flu are likely to run about 7 days and persons should not come to school or work if they don't feel well and they should not return to school or work until they have been without fever for 24 hours without taking medicines that reduce fever (Tylenol, Advil, etc.). Regular hand washing, use of Lysol and other disinfectants and hand sanitizer gel are all recommended. As a district we are isolating students who exhibit symptoms at school until someone can take them home. The school buildings are receiving additional cleaning services. Staff and students are encouraged to wash hands frequently and to cover cough and sneezes. Additional information may be found at the Tennessee Department of Education website. A copy of the letter sent to parents from the Commissioner of Education and the Commissioner of Health may be viewed here. This information will be updated as needed and as it becomes available.
