Teacher Directions for Writing This is the process that we should teach to all students in preparation of the 5th Grade TCAP Writing test. 1. Pass out a copy of “DIRECTIONS” to each student. Students do not write on this sheet. 2. Read the directions to them as they follow along. 3. Take up all “DIRECTIONS” sheets. 4. Pass out the writing prompt to each student. This sheet may be written on for pre-writing brainstorming. All information that should be including in their writing is located in the writing prompt. 5. Students should locate the main idea of the writing prompt which is found in the “writing situation”. 6. Students should locate the details of the writing prompt which is found in the “directions for writing” 7. This information should be written on the writing prompt sheet in a graphic organizer. Students should add at least two things that will be written about each detail. Give students 5 minutes to complete this pre-writing brainstorming. Time them.
8. Pass out one blank writing sheet to each student. They should put their name on the top, indent the first line, and begin writing using their graphic organizer for ideas. They should take 20 minutes to write. 9. The last 10 minutes should be a time of proofing and editing what they have written.
10. After learners have mastered these skills, we should teach them how to begin with a very interesting sentence, use transition words, include dialog, etc…
