Classifying

The process of grouping things that are alike into categories on the basis of their characteristics.

Collaborative Learning

Everyone takes on the extra responsibility both for their own well being and learning, and for the well being and learning of others.

Comparing

The process of identifying similarities and differences between or among things or ideas.

Content Area

A particular subject or discipline.

Content Standard

Detailed statement about what students should know and be able to do. A standard can include several of these.

Cooperative Groups

Where students can apply the ideas, skills, and concepts independently in practice with a small number of their peers. This group will also be "Fluid". Constantly changing, interacting, and moving along to new groups and new ideas where the learning takes them.

Creating Analogies

The process of identifying relationships between pairs of concepts - in other words, identifying relationships between relationships between relationships.

Creating Metaphors

The process of identifying a general or basic pattern in a specific topic and then finding another topic that appears to be quite different but that has the same general pattern.

Curriculum Integration

Use of connections among different content areas to promote student learning.

Differentiated Instruction

Lessons that allow each student to move and progress from the point of where they are, to where they need to be. It is a lesson based on student readiness, interest, and learning profile.

Individual Educational Plan – legal binding document through the SPED office.

IGP

Individual Growth Plan – form completed on every learner in the school by the homeroom teacher with goals and expectations in core subjects.

Inclusion

Creation of learning environments that make necessary learning accommodations for all learners.

Inquiry

Approach to change in which every component of the educational system is addressed.

Mini Lesson

Small group of students who have discovered on their own. Teacher conducts short lesson and allows them to practice. This way all students continue to advance into areas of learning to higher skills and responsibility for self learning. Self motivated and self directed. "Burn to Learn."

Power of Positive Students – behavior management system used by the entire staff to promote positive behavior by all learners.

Rubric

Scoring guide that describes the criteria on which a piece of student work will be evaluated.

Scaffolding

The teacher ensures that there is support necessary to assist the student in reaching a well set goal. It is whatever assistance is needed to move a student form prior knowledge and skill to the next level of knowledge and skill.

Self Assessment

Any technique that is used to monitor one's own progress.

Standards Based Assessments

Test instrument used to determine how students perform on a particular set of standards.

Summative Assessments

Think of the culminating task at the end of a unit or the final project. In the area of Science, the summative assessment of what the learner has mastered would be determined with the Science Fair Project. Summative assessment also comes from Unit Tests, End of the Chapter Tests, Completion of a portfolio, Completed Notebook, final projects, etc… It is also proper to list TCAP, ABACUS and STAR as a summative assessment but these should not be the only form of summative listed.

Approach to teaching and learning built around the exploration of student ideas.

Whole Group Instruction

The main skill or concept is introduced to the entire classroom or group as a base point to begin their lesson. Sometimes used to check progress of understanding or a wrap up activity.
