ASPERGER’S SYNDROME

Asperger’s Syndrome falls under the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These individuals typically have more social and communication skills than someone with autism. This is a life time disability with no present cure and requires routine, structure, and predictability for successful inclusion in society.

Asperger’s was recognized as a separate disability in 1994.

Research continues.

TEXTURE—Jeremiah (my son) LOVES to read but this love is affected by Asperger's Syndrome (form of autism). He was selecting a copy of "Treasure Island" to read for his next AR goal. When purchasing a book for Jeremiah, it has become our custom to get all the different copies (by different publishers) on the floor. He has to feel the texture of the pages of each book. If the texture feels "weird" to him, he CANNOT read the book. Sensory issues are a big issue with these individuals. Selecting books with the right page/paper texture is a coping skill that helps him to be successful.
