Black History Month

Teachers are invited to explore the links provided here as we observe Black History Month.  First observed in 1976 to coincide with the nation's bicentennial celebration, Black History Month grew out of Negro History Week, founded in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson.  Born to slaves, educated at Berea College in Kentucky and the recipient of a docotrate degree from Harvard University in 1912, Dr. Woodson was a distinguished educator as head of the graduate faculty and Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Howard University in Washington D.C.

AFRO-American Almanac® is an on-line presentation of the African in America. A historical perspective of a nation, its people, and its cultural evolution. From the beginning of the slave trade through the present, the site provides information that will give you a better understanding of the problems we face today as a nation.

The Black History Hotlist provides a lengthy index of sites.

Black History Links is a page from Cool Teaching Lessons and Units which provides site by era.

Education World offers lesson plans and other resources including acitivies, crafts, recipes, sounds and more.

Educational Bookmarks for Black History Month, February, 2006 are provided by the Grosse Pointe School District in Michigan.  The site is broken down by K-5 and 6-12.  It provides a variety of links to activities for the classroom.

From Slavery to Civil Rights:  A Timeline of African American History is an older page from the Library of Congress American Memory Site.  The dates indicate that it has not been updated recently but is does provide some great material.  The same site also provides the African-American Odyssey which includes links to several collections of African-American History.

CNN provides the History of Black History Month along with links to other activities.

The HistoryMakers is an educational institution committed to preserving, developing and providing easy access to an internationally recognized, archival collection of thousands of African American video oral histories.  The web site provides a brief history about HistoryMakers in all walks of life.

Internet4Classrooms provides a list of links on its Black History Page including history and culture.

Teaching with Historic Places - African American Lesson Plans is a lesson plan site created by National Park Service interpreters, preservation professionals, and educators.
